Laminate Flooring – You can do it yourself! Part 2

Time to start putting down the new floating laminate floor. I waited until a weekend because I was sure this would take a couple of days. I got my family together and we started working. The underlayment was a thin foam that went down first. It helped to mask flaws in the floor we were covering. It was a little tricky to tape it down – it wanted to shift. In the future I would use duct tape instead of the clear plastic tape that was included with the underlayment.

We opened all the boxes and made piles, and then we rotated which pile we took the next piece from. I don’t know if this is really necessary, but in my OCD mind it needed to be this way :) It took a little while for us to come up with a plan of action, but once we started the process went very quickly.

The planks click together on the sides and ends. We used a small scrap of the floor and put it against the edge of the plank being laid. A couple of hits with a rubber mallet put the plank into place nicely with no visible seams. I like the fact that the floor is so seamless. I worry that seams will catch shoes, etc. and the floor will wear out too soon. But, you cannot even feel the seams in this Dream Home laminate floor!

You do need to remember to stagger your planks. We alternated which side of the room we started the next row on. Example – row one we put in right to left, row two left to right. That way all of your end seams are staggered and you don’t have them all in one place.

This floor only took us around 4 hours to install in a 12×13 room. You will need to cut around doorways, etc., but other than that this floating laminate floor was a dream to install! I am ready to do another one – well almost!

FINAL OPINION I am VERY happy with this floating laminate floor. I was hesitant to put a new floor in because of the time and money involved. But we were able to install the floor ourselves in no time and it was very economical. Although we put it in a renal home, I would not hesitate putting the same floor in my own home. I love this new floating laminate floor!
